You can order your ships to explore hyperspace.
Through hyperspace exploration, you can discover/create links between
planetary systems. These links are effectively tunnels through space,
allowing you access to places you could not get to before.
To explore hyperspace, issue the Explore Hyperspace command to one or
more fleets of ships. Each fleet will enter hyperspace and discover a
new link. Once the fleet has completed its task, it will return to
the planet from which it began searching.
There is no limit to the
number of links you can find, but when too many links open near a
single planet, they become unstable more quickly.
If you split up your ships into a bunnch of small fleets, you can find a large number of links very quickly.
Do this by issuing the Explore Hyperspace command to just a few ships at a time.
This strategy is useful for finding good planets quickly.
To find faster and stronger links, send larger fleets.
It is even possible to find a link that brings ships back to their starting point.
Such links are not terribly common, and most regard them as useless.
Be careful. Although you need to create new links to allow your empire to expand,
every link you create might also open the door for your enemies!
